The Importance of Upholstery Protector
Furniture manufacturers sometimes apply a protector at the factory to help your upholstery stay cleaner longer. Fabric Protectors provide a barrier that makes it difficult for dirt and oils to bond to the fibers, and helps to prevent water based spots and spill from becoming hard to remove stains. This protection is worn off over time due to normal use, abrasive soil, and vacuuming. Studies have shown that within as little as one year over 50% of your fabrics protective qualities can be worn off. Having the protector reapplied helps slow down the ageing process by of upholstery by repelling harmful dry soil making vacuuming more efficient. Your upholstery looks cleaner longer and cleaner upholstery means less wear and a brighter appearance.
5 REASONS YOU SHOULD ALWAYS HAVE UPHOLSTERY PROTECTOR RENEWED
1. Reduces Permanent Stains
Great looking upholstery can be ruined by any ugly spot. Unprotected furniture does not repel spillage as well as protected furniture.
As you can see, without protector, the red wine spill soaks into the fabric almost immediately. When the protector is present it suspends the stain from setting in the fibers. Protector buys you time, so you can easily remove the stain. Being able to remove spots and spills more effectively prevents permanent staining.
2. Helps Save Your Fabrics Appearance
Have you ever noticed how fabrics dull out over time? This is because individual fibers can be scratched and over time the fiber looses its ability to reflect light giving it a "dull" appearance. Another great advantage of protector is that it allows abrasive soil to be easily removed from the upholstery, and this prevents the upholstery fibers from being destroyed. Vacuuming the upholstery and releasing the soils from the fibers greatly increases the life of the furniture. By applying protector, you will dramatically increase the life of your upholstery.
3. Make Spots Easier To Remove
The easier a spot is to remove, the less cleaning solution you will have to use. The less agitation you must use, and less time it will take. Many spots can be easily removed with just soft water.
4. Makes Your Next Cleaning More Effective
Having upholstery protector applied to your upholstery will enhance your next cleaning. More soil will be removed the next time your furniture is professionally cleaned.
5. Helps Avoid Costly Service Calls
Although you may want Mighty Clean Carpet Care to handle any spot or spill, carpet protector helps you remove spots that would be set in unprotected upholstery. You may be able to save a minimum service charge by removing the stain yourself.
4 Mistakes Other Cleaners Make In Applying Protector
1. Not Using High Quality Protector.
Discount protectors are not as effective and sometimes void the warranty of the upholstery. Mighty Clean Carpet Care uses only the highest quality, recommended protectors.
2. Not Using A Dedicated Container.
Using the same container for upholstery protector as alkaline cleaners can contaminate the upholstery protector making it ineffective. Our vans have a dedicated container reserved ONLY for upholstery protector.
3. Not Applying The Product Properly.
Some cleaners either under apply or over apply the protector. Under applying it doesn't allow for complete penetration on the upholstery fiber. Over applying it causes the upholstery fibers to become overly stiff and crusty. Mighty Clean Carpet Care technicians are diligently trained for proper application.
4. Not Grooming The Fabric.
For the best performance, the product should be groomed into the fabric for maximum penetration. This ensures contact with all surfaces of the fabric yarn and proper distribution and drying. Our Company thoroughly grooms the protector into the upholstery.
HOW DOES UHOLSTERY PROTECTOR WORK?
Fabrics made of nylon that are marketed as stain resistant have two stain fighting properties:
1. DYE BLOCKER
It is acid based and for the most part is clear. This dye is used to fill in extra dye sites in the fibers. The dye blocker prevents other dyes from entering the upholstery fiber such as those found in teas, coffee, fruit juice, and inks. By stopping the new dyes from penetrating the upholstery fibers, the stain won’t set in, and it can be removed much easier by common home cleaning methods.
2. FLUOROCHEMICAL
This is the fiber protector commonly marketed as 3M Scotchgard ® or DuPont Teflon®. There are two functions for the fluorochemical. First it helps to stop spills from reaching the dye blockers. Secondly it resists soils keeping them from attaching to the fibers. The fluorochemical creates a molecular shield around each fiber. The shield lowers the surface energy of the carpet fibers causing them to repel liquid, spills, dust, and dirt. This helps prevent soil and stains from being ground into or absorbed by the fibers.
By resisting dry soil, less soil bonds to the upholstery, therefore the soil is picked up by your vacuum or cleaning. Making sure that you have a sufficient amount of protector on your upholstery will help keep the soil from bonding to the upholstery. Once it bonds to the upholstery fiber, it acts like sandpaper scratching the fibers. Once the fibers are scratched, there is no way to bring them back to their original state.
